In this day of social media, the term soft life has been taken to another level. We all want luxury by any means possible and not only that, we want everyone to know that we are living our best life. We have set a standard on how the good life must look and it is not cheap.Â
Do not get me wrong, I am not against expensive things, I am against postponing your life waiting for these things or going against your beliefs to achieve them, or worse still, pretending to live that life. Why waste your life?
Life is a luxury in and of itself. It should be savored. I am not afraid of death, but I would hate to spend my life chasing after things others say are important. Sure, I would like a big house, but I am not living on the street right now. Why shouldn't I take advantage of the fact that I am not homeless? I would love to be in Santorini, but I can drive to the Kenyan Coast without stealing from anyone, so why not?
Before we continue, this is not one of those motivational posts where I give you the tried and tested strategy of getting a multimillion-dollar lifestyle by selling chicken feathers to barking monkeys because when you pour oil into water it becomes wine. If you are reading this, you are where you are supposed to be at this time. It may not be Instagram-worthy but you can start living your luxurious life despite everything. Â
So in this economy, how can we live a luxurious life?
First, it is all in your mind. How have you set things up there? Do you believe you deserve luxury? Well if you do, everything is a special occasion. Use your best plates, pour your wine into the correct wine glass and make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. Make everything an experience. My mother used to say that every day you should take a good bath, oil yourself, even if it was just with petroleum jelly, iron your clean clothes, even if they were old, and walk with your head held high. Oh, and she also said you needed to wear good underwear in case you fell in town. Apparently, falling and having people discover that you were wearing bad underwear was one of the worst things that could happen to you. But seriously, what this does is train your mind to expect good things from yourself, and as a result, you attract and choose good things. Life can be so difficult that we forget we deserve anything, including self-respect. You start allowing anyone to come near you and walk all over you with their dirty feet and touch you with their filthy hands. Take a moment to remember who the fuck you are. You are deserving of good things!
Speaking of pausing, self-care is an essential aspect of luxury that contributes to your overall well-being. We may not be able to afford to go to the spa right now, but you can crawl into bed for a nap. You could get yourself a chocolate bar, a bottle of wine, or a fancy tea. Play some relaxing music or listen to the sounds of the sea. Turn off your electronics and take an afternoon nap. In a world that glorifies burnout, rest is an undervalued luxury.
Have an attitude of gratitude. As cliché as this sounds, it is so important. Being grateful does not mean accepting mediocrity, it is acknowledging that you have done your best and tomorrow you will do better for yourself. Honestly, I have struggled with this. I have learned to thank myself.
And while you are being thankful to yourself, the universe, God, or whoever you perceive to be your source, remember to be present. Experience everything to the fullest. Yes, we hope and strive for better but we are alive today. Breathe in and feel your lungs fill with air, kiss like it is the last time every time. Listen, laugh, and enjoy your wins no matter how small.
Date up. Friend up. Associate up. People on their way or where you want to be, have a lot to offer in terms of advice and other life lessons. They say if you hang out with five idiots or if you hang out with five wise people you are the sixth either. Life is too short for you to make all the mistakes, save time and energy, and learn from others. Learning from people who you admire and love is a luxury.
